Discussion

Now that we have examined several primary sources, why do you think it is important to analyze primary sources when studying history?

Analyzing a Primary Source

Samson Rending the Lion, ca. 1497–98. Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471–1528) Woodcut; sheet 16 x 11 7/8 in. (40.6 x 30.2 cm) Gift of Georgiana W. Sargent,.

Questions:
1. Who or what is the subject of the visual?
2. Examine the details to determine the historical context of the image.
3. How is the subject depicted?
4. Does the image agree or disagree with known historical facts?

Counter Reformation Question 1

Actual student question:

Why would the Catholic priests and higher church leaders want the people not to read the bible? Why would they just want the people to here the bible at church? Why would they not want to translate the bible into the common language?

Counter Reformation Question 2

Actual Student Question:

Is there any estimate of how many works were destroyed? Also, is it possible that a particular aartist has very little representation because many most, or all of his works were destroyed during these acts of iconoclasm?

Reformation Question 3

At 2:30 in the video shown in class, they mention that Zwingli believed that Eucharist/communion is completely symbolic and is not literally Jesus' body and blood. My family growing up went to a Baptist church, and I assumed most modern protestants assume that communion is a strictly symbolic exercise. Is that true? If so, when did these beliefs about the Eucharist change?

Reformation Question 2

How does this fracturing of Church power compare to the other major religions (ie. Judaism, Islam, Buddhism)? Is there a theological elite who abruptly lose their power in a similar way? Is it at a similar point in history?

Reformation Question 1

During the Reformation period weren't there more churches that sprouted out from the main church other than the Lutheran Church?

Henry VIII, I am!

Take a look at this excerpt from a history book about Henry VIII. For homework tonight, read this post. Then, pretend you are Henry VIII. Write a letter (on paper) to Pope Leo X justifying the reasons for wanting an annulment from Catherine of Aragon. Be sure to express the actions you (King Henry) will take if your requests are not met.

The Protestant Reformation began with criticism of the Catholic Church by priests and other religious thinkers.  In England, the Reformation began with the king.
Henry VIII became king of England in 1509 at the age of 17.  As a young king, he was a devout Catholic who wrote angry protests against the "venomous" ideas of Luther.  Henry's actions won him the title "Defender of the Faith".
By 1525, Henry's wife, Catherine of Aragon, had borne only one child, a girl named Mary.  This presented a problem for Henry, who wanted a male heir.  It was thought that a female monarch could weaken England politically, and he believed that Catherine would produce no male heir.  Henry decided to have the marriage annulled, or declared invalid based on church laws, so that he could marry again.
The pope offered Henry several solutions to his problem but would not agree to the annulment because Catherine and her nephew, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, opposed to it.  The dilemma became known as the "king's great matter".  While Henry argued with the pope over his annulment, he fell in love with Anne Boleyn.  Henry soon took matters into his own hands.
Henry summoned Parliament.  Known as the Reformation Parliament, the gathering led to a declaration that England no longer considered itself under the authority of the Pope.  Instead, Henry himself became the head of the Church of England.  He changed the rituals of the church very little, but Henry closed Catholic monasteries and convents and distributed much of the land to nobles. This helped build more public support for the split from the church.
In 1533, Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII were secretly married.  Later that year, after Parliament had declared Henry's marriage to Catherine null and void, Anne gave birth to a girl, Elizabeth.  The next year, Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, which required subjects to take an oath declaring Henry VIII to be "Supreme Head of the Church of England".  The break with Rome was complete. Question 3

Why didn't John Wycliffe and John Huss' efforts create a reformation of the church, if they were so successful?

Where did the  purgatory come from ?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines purgatory as a "purification”. When we die, we undergo what is called the particular, or individual, judgment. Augustine said, in The City of God, that "temporary punishments are suffered by some in this life only, by others after death, by others both now and then; but all of them before that last and strictest judgment". Purgatory is a reminder to us that we are not free to do any evil we like in this life and then just repent when we die and go straight to heaven.

Where Does Purgatory Come From?

Purgatory comes from a Latin word called purgare that means to clean. According with the Catholic Roman church it is a place that punish those who depart of God's Grace. The faith of the Church concerning purgatory is expressed in the Decree of Union by the council of Florence and it is defined in the Council of Trent.

Why did Martin Luther's 95 Theses get so much attention? Why did people pay attention to him, while John Huss’ and John Wycliffe's attempts at reforming the Christian Church were less successful?

Martin Luther's 95 thesis got so much attention because they were in the people's language and they were different. No one had stood up by posting anything on the church doors.priva People listened to him because Martin Luther did it more publicly, while John Wycliffe and John Huss did it more secluded. Martin Luther was a "big break" and all of the people listened to him.

Importance of the 95 theses

Why did Martin Luther's 95 Theses get so much attention? Why did people pay attention to him, while John Huss’ and John Wycliffe's attempts at reforming the Christian Church were less successful? The “95 Theses” were written in 1517 by a German priest and professor of theology named Martin Luther. His revolutionary ideas served as the catalyst for the eventual breaking away from the Catholic Church and were later instrumental in forming the movement known as the Protestant Reformation. Luther wrote his radical “95 Theses” to express his growing concern with the corruption within the Church. In essence, his Theses called for a full reform of the Catholic Church and challenged other scholars to debate with him on matters of church policy. Luther sent his 95 Theses to a few bishops and some friends; therefore he did not expect or receive a prompt response. By the end of 1517, however, copies of the 95 Theses had been printed in Leipzig, Nuremberg and Basel. Some humanists and princes passionately approved of the theses, but parts of the Roman Church completely rejected them. The most vehement voice against the theses was the Indulgence Priest Tetzel, who supposedly categorized Luther as a follower of the heretic Jan Hus and threatened to have him burned at the stake. It's important to notice that all of the 95 theses have to do with indulgences. People paid attention to Martin Luther more than the other two because his 95 theses had a huge impact on the people. He had spoken against the church in such a big way and he was a monk! People who heard/read the 95 were able to know that it was true because he backed it up with scriptural evidence and the printing press was coming out which would allow for others to compare his 95 theses to the bible. He was the first really "bang" to start off the whole idea of how the church was curupt. Roman Catholic Church History

Hello Class,
Below are the questions that I displayed in class today. You will have time to research and post about these in your teams tomorrow!

1.Where did the doctrine of purgatory come from?

2. If the printing press had been around for less than 100 years prior to the translating of the Bible, were there really that many people that had learned to read all throughout Europe (so that they could read the newly-translated Bible) or were they still dependent on just a handful of people in the community to tell them what the Bible said?

3. Why did Martin Luther's 95 Theses get so much attention? Why did people pay attention to him, while John Huss’ and John Wycliffe's attempts at reforming the Christian Church were less successful?

Finlay Military Hospital. With peeling canary-yellow walls and hordes of people coming and going, the aging building doesn't look like a place where Cuba would hold its most valuable prisoner.  But police officers and soldiers surround the hospital. Inside, Cuban special forces guard the 65-year-old U.S. citizen, emotionally and physically frail and approaching his fifth year in solitary confinement. North of the Florida Straits, Gross' imprisonment is seen as the major impediment to better relations with Havana.

Why Watching News is Good!!!!!!

We have learned that by keeping up with news that's going around the world right now,we can be prepared for anything that happens. If there's an epidemic spreading, then we have to be prepared for it. We do not live in a bubble of protection. We need to help and "estar listo"(be ready)  for everything that pops up around our Earth. If we did not pay attention to the news our bubble would be popped without us knowing. For example if Toyota called a recall on all Hilux because of bad breaks and you didn't know what do you think would happen? BOOM! Car wreck!

What have  You learned regarding with  the importante of keeping up with the current events?

We've learned that we might know what could happen in the future. Also it helps us to prevent because it tells us before a disaster happens. It is important to keep up with current events because we can have  a family member that is in a different country and we need to know what could happen to those places.  We could expand our wisdom. Also we can gain knowledge.

It's important for us to know about the past to perfect the future. Current events will eventually be history and knowing about them will help us understand more. We can always use the knowledge we have then and now to help the future.  If we watch the current news we will know how to act or even vote for who is right.  We can also learn from the geniuses now to help our own future.

Islamic State crisis: The 13-year-old on 'righteous path'

Can you imagine how horrible it is that the faces of the people fighting in the war are getting younger?  Imagine people your age or your child's age, these islamic people are building a new future army.  Teaching them how to fight, shoot guns, and hate infidels.

-Do you agree with these Islamic states?  Why or why not?

The two substances are believed to work together to speed up healing and stimulate the body's production of new skin to cover the wound. The standard treatment for leg ulcers is a compression bandage, which heals up to 75 percent of the lesions within six months.

Spray on bandages

In the year 2014 there was a new big break in medical products. It was called the spray on bandage. Do you remember bandages were sticky and it was teeth gritting when you had to rip them off. Well this invention made it possible to forget that. Created in South Korea and Germany, it helped the doctors keep track of the wounds and know the healing process of the cut.

When wounds heal they need extra glucose and oxygen. Without these compounds it would leave behind painful sores. Thankfully they created a spray on bandage to monitor the healing. It still allowed the compounds to get in.  This bandage was created before 2014, but it was to expensive so it could not be finished. Eventually it was finished and it has been a huge improvement to humanity.

Medical Improvements

Back in 2014 scientists discovered  how to protect injuries in a safer and more efficient way. Unlike ancient times were bandages would rip your skin when taking them off these new and improved spray on bandages tried in less than a minute. Conor L. Evans was the cause of excitement with this new invention! He was a Harvard Medical School Assistant Professor.

With this spray on bandage came the use of cameras and smartphones(a rectangular object in which you had to touch to make it function) with flash to take a picture of the wound. This light from the flash caused the molecules to react with the oxygen levels. The wound would emit light. If the wound showed up with a red color warns the doctor there's a problem. If its was blue it showed the doctor that everything was going great.

Now these bandages have been improved to tell us pH levels, bacterial load and other important data points needed to monitor serious injuries.

Similar to many other countries in the area, Siria was experiencing "Arab Spring"-a series of revolutions that began in north africa.
Though the group was radical, they did not garner much attention until April 2013. When the islamic state of Iraq decided to join forces with Jabhat-Al Nurse they formed a new organization that he called the Islamic state of Iraq and Al-Sham.
No matter what they are called, the one thing that was becoming apparant is that they had expanded its control fast. ISIS had been grabing headlines with the public beheadings of journalists. The only way to defeat them is by developing ground troops.

The Childhood Of A Serial Killer(Genghis Khan)                                                                                                                                                   Genghis Khan, originally named Timujin, had a very rough childhood because from a early age he was forced to the brutality of the Mongolian Steppe. The Rival Tatars poisoned and killed his father which left his mother to take care of her seven children alone.Genghis grew up hunting and may have killed his half-brother in dispute for food.During his teenage years, rival clans kidnapped him and his young wife and he spent time as a slave before escaping.By his early 20s he had established as a formidable warrior and leader.By 1206, he had succesfully consolitated the steppe confederations under his banner and began to turn his attention to the outside conquest.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Genghis Khan's childhood affected his future because he wanted revenge. His revenge was to kill everyone, his revenge was so bad that he is responsible for the deaths of as many as 40 million people. That's 11 percent of the world!

The Great Khan
There was once a great hero named Temujin. He was a Mongolian leader. Temujin, also known as Genghis Khan, united Mongolian people, and started to conquer Asia. His father was poisoned by his tribe and his family was expelled from the tribe. Genghis grew up in a "survival mode".
He went back to the tribe that had kicked his family out, to take REVENGE on his fathers death. he made leaders of his enemies. He killed many people. Ganghis Khan was responsible for the deaths of as many as 40 million people on his conquest.

 Genghis the Warrior

We really don't know about Genghis chilhood but we do know that when he was nine, his father was poisoned and they expelled him from the tribe. He grew up by hunting and surviving. In the early 20s he wanted  revenge because they killed his father. Genghis established a warrior and leader ,and he successfully conquered the Mongol tribe.

Genghis killed over forty million people while fighting. During his empire he developed many ways to conquer. He developed the seige warfare and pretend retreat. Some people say he died  from injuries because he fell from a horse, but no one knows where he was buried.

 The Great Warrior

In 1192 Temujin was born of a Mongolian chief.  We don't know much about his childhood but we do know that we was 9 years old his father was poised by an enemy tribe. He had a rough time growing up and trying to survive. He killed one of his half brothers in order to survive. Later on, he runs away leaving his poor mother with 7 children. After wondering a few years, he returns to his tribe, and avenges his father's murder.

In 1206 he became the supreme leader of all tribes. His name was changed to Genghis Khan ,which means great ruler. He also unified the Mongol tribes. He was a great conqueror and a great battle strategist. Two strategies are pretend retreat, and siege warfare.  During his conquest his name was famously feared thought the land. Genghis Khan is the role model for Mongolians, but a monster to us.

Ghengis Khan conquered nearly 12 million square miles of territory- more tan any individual in history. He modernized Mongolian culture, embraced religious freedom, and helped open contact between east and west.

He was born along the Banks of the Onon River. His original name was Temujin. He was proclaimed Ghegis Khan until 1206 when he was proclaimed leder f the Mongols. Ghenis was forced to contend with the brutality of the Mongolian Steppe. The Tartars killed his father and there he promised to take revenge of his fathers death. He usually promoted his officers on skill ad experience rather thn class, ancestry or even past allegiances. He was responsable for the deaths of as many 40 million people. He was tolerant of different reigions. Ghengis Khan created one of the first international postal sysytem.

Nobody knows how he died or were he is buried. Some people think he died in 1227from injuries sutained in  fall from a horse. The Soviets tried to snuff out his memory In Mongolia.

Coffee with the Khan

Imagine you are a news reporter in a coffee shop enjoying a smoothie with Genghis Khan (don't worry, he is unarmed and wants to speak with you). As the two of you discuss his life, he gives you the following statements:

"I am the punishment of God...If you had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you."
--Genghis Khan

"If you're afraid - don't do it. If you're doing it - don't be afraid."
--Genghis Khan

"An action committed in anger is an action doomed to failure."

Document your dialogue with the Khan. Choose one of the quotes and compose several interview questions. Teams to compose questions: Gadget, Pages, and Moderation

The Design and Promotion teams will answer the questions as Genghis Khan would answer based upon what we learned about him in our text book and the "10 Facts Page."  Be sure your responses are thorough!

Mrs. Kane
I think that the most important thing for a goverment to work is to inforce there military force and
to try to maintain their people from not leaving the goverment.

Why do We Study History?

History is the window into the past. If we understand the past, we can understand the present. It helps us to keep us informed on current event, appreciate multiple perspectives and interpretation, and trains us to gather evidence and to find patterns and trends. We can analyze history and strengthens our critical thinking skills. It gives us to understand of other people in culture, the excitement of discovery, the reward of solving world’s problem, and it challenges us to think outside and think creatively.
History is FUN!!!

Who Makes History?

A Worker Reads History

By: Bertolt Brecht
Who built the seven gates of Thebes?
The books are filled with names of kings.
Was it the kings who hauled the craggy blocks of stone?
And Babylon, so many times destroyed.
Who built the city up each time? In which of Lima's houses,
That city glittering with gold, lived those who built it?
In the evening when the Chinese wall was finished
Where did the masons go? Imperial Rome
Is full of arcs of triumph. Who reared them up? Over whom
Did the Caesars triumph? Byzantium lives in song.
Were all her dwellings palaces? And even in Atlantis of the legend
The night the seas rushed in,
The drowning men still bellowed for their slaves.

Young Alexander conquered India.
He alone?
Caesar beat the Gauls.
Was there not even a cook in his army?
Phillip of Spain wept as his fleet
was sunk and destroyed. Were there no other tears?
Frederick the Greek triumphed in the Seven Years War.
Who triumphed with him?

Each page a victory
At whose expense the victory ball?
Every ten years a great man,
Who paid the piper?

So many particulars.
So many questions.
