I would let people practice their own religion but if i did a religion for my kingdom, it would be christianity (which peolple can join optionally). It has affected governments of the past by changing and adapting to new things.
I would let the people have the choice to decide in what religipon to go to. For me i would put Christianity as the official religion of my civilization. I has change by the way they look the things with Christianity.
